Flood Preparation & the Need for Flood Insurance in Florida

9/12/2011 9:55:00 AM

Floods can occur with little or no notice, so being prepared is important. If you live in a flood-prone area, or even a low-risk area, it is important that your flood insurance in Florida is up to date. All flood insurance has a 30 day waiting period once the policy is taken out before it comes into effect, so don’t wait until the rain starts falling or the river starts rising before you sign up for your policy.

If you live in a flood-prone area, then it is important to have an emergency escape route pre-planned both for leaving your house and for making your way to higher ground. If possible, have a number of routes mapped out so you can be prepared for any situation. Make sure your children know these routes and have practiced them with you.

Make sure you have a stockpile of building materials, including sand bags, plastic sheeting, lumber, hammers and nails. Have emergency supplies like food and water, flash lights, radio, extra batteries, first aid kit and essential medicines stored away somewhere in your home. Designate a friend or family member as an emergency contact person who can spread the word that you and your family are safe in the event of a flood. Make sure everyone in your family has this person’s telephone number.

If flooding is expected, tune in to the radio to listen for updates. Make sure everyone in your family knows how to turn off the power, gas and water in your house and do so before the flood waters rise.

A valid Florida flood insurance policy will be a blessing once the waters subside, but knowing what to do and being prepared will be just as vital during the crisis.
