The first of the month arrives: you’ve paid your rent and your Florida Renters Insurance, and now it’s time to open up your dreadful utility bills. Have you ever wondered why your utility bills are so expensive? You’re not alone! Plenty of renters are wondering the same thing. Even if you all know the basics: shutting off and unplugging unused appliances, being cautious of the water running, etc. your wallet may still thin. Even though you don’t own the home, there are plenty of slight lifestyle changes that can put more money in your pocket and still keep the lights on at the same time!
Here are some great suggestions we’ve found on how to save energy and decrease your monthly utility bills:- Low-Flow Showerhead
- Remove your old showerhead and replace it with a low-flow model.
- Insulated Drapes/Blackout Curtains/Cellular Blinds
- This will significantly reduce your heating bills. These can be taken if you decide to move.
- Shade Your Air Conditioner
- If you have a window-mounted air conditioner, you can save energy and money by shading it from the sun. The cooler the air conditioner, the more efficient it runs.
- Pay Attention to Your Refrigerator
- Did you know that 25% of your electric bill may go towards the refrigerator. Keep its compressor coils clean to ensure your energy bill stays low. Cover your food. Check the fridge's seal. Fill your fridge with water jugs to keep it full and colder.
- Aerators
- Put aerators on your faucets to save water. Remove them if you decide to move out of the apartment.
- Tinfoil Radiator Protection
- By lining the walls behind your radiations with tinfoil, you can increase the heat in your apartment with no extra electricity usage.
- Surge Protectors/Power Bars
- Phantom power is a problem, and it can be hard to remember to unplug everything from the walls. With surge protectors and power bars, you only have to unplug one plug. Some power bars can stop phantom power with the flick of a switch.
- Repairs
- One of the benefits of having a landlord is that they will fix things. Don't let a slightly leaky faucet go unrepaired. Leaks account for 13% of home water usage. If there is something you’re landlord doesn’t cover, check your Florida Renters Insurance policy to see if it is covered.
- Arrange Furniture Properly
- Make sure your furniture isn't blocking vents or baseboards.
- Hot Water Bottle/Electric Blanket
- Instead of turning up the thermostat, you can invest in an electric blanket or hot water bottle. Each of these uses less energy than a central heating system.
Now that you’ve saved money on your utilities, your wallet should feel a little heavier.
